Medicinal Enema Pt. 2

What is the History of Enemas?

Although we do not have direct evidence, many archaeologists believe that the ancient Egyptians practiced a form of enema therapy, which they thought was passed down from the Gods.  Herodotus, the famous Greek chronicler, described the common use of enemas in Egypt.

a ancient egypt

In ancient Babylon and Assyria they used colon cleansing as their tablets mention what we would call enemas.

a babylonian tablet

These writing are dated as early as 600 B.C.

In the Susruta Samhita, a Hindu medical text, we find references to enema syringes and other items related to this therapy.

Around the fourth and fifth century the Greek physician Hippocrates, one of the three fathers of modern medicine, mentions the use of enemas in his text, On Regimen in Acute Disease.  He suggested that they were particularly good for fighting fever and as well as other medical problems.

Following the lead of Hippocrates, the Roman physician, Asclepiades relied on enemas as his therapy of first choice for removing intestinal paracites, relieving constipation, and addressing fever.

It is widely known that ancient Africans considered the enema a first choice for many problems.

In the middle ages the rich and royals believed in the enema as almost a health necessity.  For example in 1480, Louis XI’s apoplexy was lessened, after receiving an enema.  The king was so impressed with the results of is enemas that he had his pet dogs treated to enemas whenever there was the slightest hint of a problem.

I had a friend whose mother was like that.  He did not dare tell her he did not feel good, because he knew what she would do about it.  But after studying about enemas, she may have been practicing good medicine, and at worst it would not hurt.

The 17th century Parisian society embraced enemas as sort of a frenzied fade.  One writer called this age of enemas. They thought internal colon cleansing through colon hydrotherapy provided the key to wellness.

The French King Louis XIV’s doctor recorded 2000 enemas that were given to the king.

The advent of laxatives began the decline of enemas.  The doctors found that less trouble for them.  Just give the patient a dose and leave.   But they were forgetting about the other usages and benefits of enemas also.

A renaissance of enemas was begun by Dr. John H. Kellogg.

a john H. Kellogg

He started using enemas again.  He had some 40,000 patients with gastrointestinal problems and never had to do surgery.  Why?  He was doing medicinal enemas instead.  He was the real doctor behind the fictional doctor in the movie, The Road to Wellville.
Later in the 1950’s colon hydrotherapy became popular, and the fade turned Beverly Boulevard in California into what was called “Colonic row”. It is said that Mae West had an enema every day.  But that fade subsided by the middle 1960’s.

Medicinal Enema Pt. 1

What is an Enema?

In general an enema is inserting liquid into the rectum.  It is a healthful or healing procedure in which a liquid is injected into the rectum, often to cause the content of the lower colon to pass out it contents.  But it more generally is used medicinally to put medically intended substances into the body.  Both of these purposes can have medically beneficial results.

The first and most obvious use of an enema is for causing the elimination of feces from the bowels.

That is the most widely known use of enemas.  If one is constipated,

a good old fashioned enema may be just the answer.

While occasional constipation can make you generally feel bad, uncomfortable, and out of sorts,

the enema is a refreshing and often speedy relief of the discomfort, etc.  You do not have to wait for some drug or fiber to work its way through the system.  This is a relatively simple in and out procedure.  You will be amazed in most cases how quickly you will feel so much better.

Enemas, in general, are not so much alternative therapy as they are just a modern taboo socially.  The FDA

has approved the enema treatments that you get in the little bottles from the store.

Many reject the option of an enema for occasional constipation because they think that it to be too complicated, messy, or hard to do.  It is not.  The first time or two you do it it may not be comfortable or easy, but that is just because you are learning how to do a new thing.  Once you get the hang of it, the process is no fuss and no muss.  Most people can easily do it to themselves.

If you purchase a prepared enema in an injection bottle,

 enema bottle

it comes with easy to follow instructions.  There are some name brands of these prepared enemas for constipation.  [It is bottles like these that I use for almost all of my enema procedures.]  Also most of the major drugstore chains have a house brands that are the same thing.  I have even found in the 99 cent store a generic of the same thing, same ingredients, saline.  The only difference is the box and a better price.

One of the good things about these bottles is that they are reusable.  [Obviously, for the same person.]   Just quick wash it up with a little hand soap, rinse, and let it dry out.  It is ready for the next usage.  I have had bottles that have lasted me for months of regular use.

Here is little secret in plane sight.  The most common liquid in this enema bottles is just saline, a very light salt solution.  If you make saline to flush out your sinuses,

a sinus flish

you can do the same thing to make liquid for your enema bottle.

And beyond that for the occasional constipation, almost always you can you use good water to do the same thing.  Remember, I said good water.

a polluted water

If you do not want to drank it, do not use it in an enema.  The general rule is if it is anything that you can safely drink, you can use it as an enema liquid.  If your tap water has a lot of things, like chlorine and fluoride, in it,

a bad tap waterit is not even good enough for an enema treatment.

What is it about Skin Cancer and Sunscreen?

There is much controversy on cancer and sunscreen.  It is true that the sunscreen manufacturers have spent millions of dollars to promote the mindset that sunscreen prevents cancer and is pretty much a essential when you are going to be in the sun, any sun, or you are going to die, die, die, a horrible death.

While I may have express that melodramatically, they are pushing the fear button.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer gives an interesting  recommendation that clothing, hats and shade as primary barriers to UV radiation should be used when in sunlight and further says that “sunscreens should not be the first choice for skin cancer prevention and should not be used as the sole agent for protection against the sun”.  Fear the sun?  You need to be protected against it.  Fear. Fear. Fear.

Sunlight is not our enemy.  We can abuse our friend, but of itself sunlight, full spectrum light, is good and healthful for us.  The evidence is clear.

Sunscreen is by its producers own statements intended to insure that you do not have full spectrum sunlight.   Who are we to say that the eliminated light wavelengths that are screened out are to beneficial in moderation?  The evidence of our ignorance is clear on this subject.

I remind you here of the juvenile jaundice treatment with sunlight.  The researchers have told us that direct sunlight is 6.5 times more effective in treating this problem than artificial lights of the supposed needed lightwaves lengths alone.  It would seem to be obvious that some things in the other wavelengths are beneficial in heliotherapy.  That is, there are some things useful in the natural light that we are ignorant of.

When we start eliminating from full spectrum light certain waves, we are stepping out in ignorance.  We do not know everything.  We are losing the balanced light of heliotherapy.

While sunscreen may be effective in preventing sunburn, beyond that little is known about its overall safety.  For some reason the FDA stopped its study into its safety and effectiveness in 1978.  Therefore there are no official safety standards.

Some interesting facts.

There is no agreement that sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer.  There has been a lot of one sided advertising by the  companies.  However, that notwithstanding there is no agreement on this.

If fact there is some evidence that sunscreen may cause the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma.

skin cancer

Some researchers speculate that free radicals released by sunscreen chemicals breaking down the sunlight may be a cause of the promotion of melanoma.

*There are more high SPF products than ever before, but no proof that they’re better.

*Some scientists are now saying that too little sun could harm you, reducing the body’s vitamin D levels.

*The common ingredient in sunscreens is vitamin A, which may speed the development of cancer.

There is an FDA study suggesting that a form of vitamin A, which is  retinyl palmitate, may when used topically in sunlight, may speed the growth of skin tumors and lesions. The sunscreen manufactures put vitamin A in 41 percent of sunscreens.

*Sunscreens have free radicals and other skin-damaging byproducts in them.

When sunscreen is applied too little or reapply infrequently scientists say that the sunscreens are expected to cause more free radical damage than UV rays on bare skin.

What is it about Juvenile Jaundice and Heliotherapy?

Juvenile jaundice is fairly common in newborns.  This is usually temporary and usually harmless.

The issue arises after there is a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is naturally produced by the breaking down of red blood cells.  Everyone has low levels of bilirubin in their bloodstream. However in this form of jaundice, bilirubin begins to build up and is deposited within layer of fat tissues under the skin. The red/orange color of this deposit causes the infant’s skin and whites of his eyes to look yellow.

While this is normally a harmless and temporary issue, at times it can be serious.  That is when the bilirubin levels have gotten extremely high.  I am not intending anything I say here to be taken as diagnosis or medical advice.  It FYI from my research and call it my personal opinion.

The first treatment usually suggested is frequently feeding the baby.  It seem that increasing the hydration of the child tends to flush out the problem which normally only lasts 1 to 2 weeks anyway.  Some say these feeds should be scheduled every 2 to 3 hours.  Some of the extra feeding may be with watered down formula.  This protocol is for hydration in the extra feeding to flush out the excess bilirubin.

Phototherapy with or without a biliblanket (a medical device blanket that bathes the child in a particular light wave)
light therapy

is the most common form of treatment for jaundice. This treatment is used for a few days until the liver is mature enough to handle the bilirubin on its own.

When the researchers are talking about phototherapy they are in the end talking about heliotherapy.  The sun has full spectrum light.  Those waves are included with many other good and healthful waves.  It seems that they are avoiding the natural sun like the plague.

No one it talking about taking your child out in the sun and baking him like a sizzling roast.

But look at is happening now.  It is the opposite extreme.  We keep the infant completely covered and shaded from any sunlight.  The sky would fall if the baby was exposed to direct sunlight.

I was watching a new mother getting out of her car to go into the grocery.  She, before she took the child out of the inside the car shade, completely covered the baby in a blanket.  It was like she was protecting the child from the rattlesnake strike of the sun.

[I know the mother was lovingly intended.  Just saying.]    It would have taken her less that thirty seconds to be inside the store.  God forbid that the infant’s hands and face be in the sunlight for thirty seconds.   This is media driven hysteria.

The sunlight is natural in our world.  We are through the generations adapted to live in a world that has sunlight.  While it is not there for us to abuse, it is there for us to use.

Light treatment uses light to eliminate bilirubin in the blood. The skin  and blood absorb the correct light waves. When this has happened, they change bilirubin into products, which the baby can process and pass out of his system.

As used in hospitals for over 30 years, phototherapy treatments provide light shining directly on an undressed, but diapered, baby.  Their eyes are protected from the light with patches.

Short periods of exposure to direct full spectrum sunlight by the child can be used to do a similar treatment.  This is heliotherapy.

I found this quote from National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine, 8600 Rockville Pike, Bethesda MD, 20894 USA.  [author unknown]

This is the conclusion of the question is sun therapy a good substitute for artificial phototherapy for juvenile jaundice.

Data revealed that sunlight is almost 6.5 times more effective than a phototherapy unit when operating at the ward geometry after taking isomerization efficiency and area of exposure into consideration. Moreover, sunlight is still more effective during the winter season, when its intensity is lower. Thus, sunlight may be considered an alternative phototherapy source for the treatment of neonatal jaundice, particularly in areas where conventional phototherapy units are unavailable.”

That is an amazing quote.  But it raises a question for me …

If sunlight [heliotherapy, sun therapy] is 6.5 times more effective, why do they say that is true “PARTICULARLY in areas where conventional phototherapy units are unavailable”?  Why is heliotherapy even considered an alternative?  If it is 6.5 times more effective, and they know it is, It would appear that sunlight would be the first choice and the “conventional” choice should be the alternative to the better natural option.

Man’s ego tends to make him think that he can do it better than nature.  And he often overlooks healing in the light of day.

What are some benefits of Vitamin D from Heliotherapy?

Sundry diseases

Researchers have found Vitamin D to have great  potential benefits in many conditions; although they remain more or less speculative, they deserve a look see.  Here are some benefited conditions.

Neuromuscular function –

Osteoporosis of course increases the risk of fractures. Falling often breaks bones, and vitamin D can improve with both brittle bones and fall breaks.  A 2004 five randomized clinical trials concluded that vitamin D increase reduces the risk of falling by 22%; most of the participants were women.  Who knows why that its, but it was an interesting observation.  A 2006 study reported that a 700 IU increase produced a 46% reduction women falling but this was not observed in men.

The protection was greatest in the older women, who are less active; the difference between men and women may result from differences in physical activity, muscle size, or diet. The strange finding may be because vitamin D binds to receptors in muscles.  This can cause improvements in strength and balance may account for the benefit.

Low Vitamin D levels have been shown to have a relationship to persistent and otherwise unexplained muscle and bone pain, and some patients have been helped by raising their level.  There is a place for judicious sun therapy in this.

Multiple Sclerosis –

Several observational studies seems to have connected high consumption of vitamin D related to a reduced risk of multiple sclerosis.    This might be a call for heliotherapy in such situations.

Cardiovascular disease

Vitamin D some say function as an important factor in vascular health.  They associate osteoporosis with an higher coronary artery disease risk.  This is particularly noted with low blood levels of vitamin D coronary artery calcification.

There have been animal studies concluding that vitamin D has a role in regulating blood pressure, but a 2005 Harvard analysis could not duplicate that link in humans.  That study was done with artificial supplementation.

As research has shown with vitamin E that the natural form helped heart disease and the science lab “equivalent” did not work and even caused other problems.  Could it be that natural vitamin D from the light of day work?  The “equivalent” is not always equivalent.

Low levels of vitamin D appear related to an increased risk of stroke and congestive heart failure.  There is some research that noted a reduction of inflammation with congestive heart failure.

Other disorders

Diabetes –  Researchers relate that diabetes is helped in animals with animals.  There is a protection function seen.   A little natural sunlight certainly could not hurt as a preventative against diabetes, but who knows on this one.

Arthritis – The Framingham Heart Study data showed researchers that high levels of vitamin D corresponds to reduced risk of arthritis in the knee.

Lung Health – High vitamin D levels are connected to better lung function, a stronger immune system, and an enhanced ability to fight off certain infections, such as tuberculosis.

Psoriasis – Vitamin D treatments been approved to treat psoriasis.

All these vitamin D benefits seem to scream at us to GET SOME SUN, heliotherapy.

What are some benefits of Vitamin D from Heliotherapy?

bone loss

As you probably know, osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle/fragile from loss of bone mass, normally this is the result deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D.  Since our deficiencies is vitamin D is primarily caused by modern man’s lack of sun, it is reasonable to think that getting regular direct sun is helpful in relation to this condition.

I was reading a medical doctor’s blog on the problem of osteoporosis. He was lamenting the fact that elderly women were consuming far below the recommended vitamin D intake in their diet.

I am not saying anything bad about the good doctor, but he was seemingly oblivious to the fact that sunlight is the greatest source of vitamin D.  It never occurred to him that the lack of heliotherapy in our normal lives today may be the problem.  For him the only answer was diet and especially supplementations of that which we should be getting normal in the light of day.

Why do we need Vitamin D for Osteoporosis?

There are two things that you need in relation to osteoporosis  1) an adequate calcium intake and 2) adequate corresponding amounts of vitamin D.  With these two thing you are set up for the expecting, correcting, and maintaining bone density and strength.

good bones

It is not vitamin D and calcium alone, but they are the natural foundation for proper health with the condition.  And they must both be there, because they work in concert.

First as many have noted, vitamin D helps the body absorb the calcium from the intestines.  [The most bio absorbable form of calcium is that which we find in plants, not rocks.]  You can swallow a truck load of supplemental calcium, but if you intestines are not letting any of it pass into the body, the only thing that you are getting is an expensive toilet flush.  Bye. Bye. Calcium.

Calcium is needed for many things in the body, like heart health.  So when there is not enough calcium being absorbed, the body starts to cannibalize the bones for the needed minerals.

In my book on fasting I talk about how, when a fast goes too long, the body starts to cannibalize

the good muscles and organs.  This is starvation not fasting.

In osteoporosis we see a similar thing.  The body is being denied need calcium, and you are starving.  So, you take it from the good bones.  In fasting the sign of starvation is when you have what I call the second hunger.  That is when it is imperative that you start to end the fast. Osteoporosis is the sign that you are starving for calcium, and you should break the, figuratively speaking, calcium fast.

That is not normally or generally done by just taking in more calcium rich plants or supplementation.  It is about absorption.

Vitamin D cause the intestines to open up to more absorption of calcium.  This opening up of the absorption can be done naturally by the light of day.  Vitamin D from sun therapy is a key to the absorption issues and calcium.  [An intestinal cleans probably is an important thing to do in regard to osteoporosis. Clean intestines absorb nutrients better and more correctly.]

There is a parallel with turmeric.

It is a spice that has many medicinal uses.  It has even now been recognized by the FDA for minor pain relief.  But it was not working for me.  I later found that if you supplement it with black pepper it works well.  What happens is that the black pepper opens the intestines to absorb the active part of turmeric, cucumin.
This is what vitamin D does for calcium.  Beyond that this is what heliotherapy does for osteoporosis.

Diverse Malignancies

The incidences of colon cancer, breast cancer, and other malignancies seems to go up among people who live farther from the equator.

It is not outrageous to note that the reduced exposure to sunlight and vitamin D may explain this statistical difference.  Like we see in prostate cancer, the specifics vary from one study to the next.

That being said, there is a 2006 review, which concluded that the overall pattern suggests benefit from vitamin D and by extension sunlight, especially for colon cancer.

colon cancer

A 2006 Harvard studied men  and found that a 10 ng/ml rise in blood levels of this vitamin suggests that there is a 17% reduction of developing cancer and if cancer is contracted there appears to be a 29% lower risk of dying from the disease.  Other studies offer the plausibility that vitamin D may have an effect in reducing the risk of cancer other cancers like those of the pancreas and kidney.

Well what is all this talk about sunlight and skin cancer?

 skin cancer

At first blush I would be thinking about the abuse of sunlight, overindulging.  In many cases this is a medical historical factor for an individual.  A little wine remember is good for some madidies, but being a wino can cause some health issues.

That being said I found an intriguing suggestion.  I am not giving this as fact but an interesting FYI about sun therapy and skin cancer.

Zane R. Kime M.D., M.S., received his medical degree from Loma Linda University. He also held a Masters of Science in Nutrition from the University of California, Davis.

Dr Zane R Kime, author of the book Sunlight, said:

“The author became increasingly convinced, as he studied the available research data, that the highly refined western diet plays the leading role, both in the ageing process and in the development of cancer, and that sunlight seems only to accelerate the problem.”

This seems to be saying that the problem is not the sun but the interaction of sun and a diet of highly refined food.  Reducing the highly refined food may be the correct solution to this issue and not avoiding the judicious receiving of sunlight.  I

In another against the stream of popular thought, according to the American Cancer Society, some evidence exists that ultraviolet light therapy may be effective in helping treat certain kinds of skin cancer.  [Notice that is certain kinds and not all kinds.]  Of course, the sun gives us full spectrum light that includes ultraviolet light.

I read one account of a man who developed skin cancer and surprised the doctor by curing it with heliotherapy.  He got lucky, I suppose, and had the kind of cancer that was a correct treatment for.  I can find no list of the particular cancers that may be benefited by sun therapy.  But this is an FYI.  Do with it what you will, or not.

What are some benefits of Vitamin D from Heliotherapy?

There are  many issues that vitamin D has been proven to correct or address positively.  And there is no reason to believe that anyone has the full list.  But we can see by the things that we do know that vitamin D is important and heliotherapy is important as a regular part of our natural lives.  It is in that vain that I offer a few examples to accent the importance of natural vitamin D.  Even if you do not have these problems, may be it is not unreasonable to think that boosting your vitamin D with heliotherapy might immunize or prevent you for developing them and other issues.

Prostate cancer

sun therapy
Vitamin D is known to have a part in regulating cell growth.  Scientific researchers after experiments tell us that it may helps prevent the out of control cell multiplication that we see in cancer.  This happens as it tends to reduce cell division, limiting blood flow to tumors (angiogenesis), and advancing cancer cells’ death (apoptosis)  As a result there is limiting of the spread of cancer cells (metastasis).

The prostate has a large contingent of vitamin D receptors.  Beyond that, it also filled with enzymes that convert biologically inactive vitamin D, known as 25(OH)D, into the active form of the vitamin, known as  1,25(OH)2D. These enzymes work more actively in normal prostate cells than they do in prostate cancer cells.  So, it would seem the sooner that you supplement vitamin D with heliotherapy the better.

Do the results from these experiments translate into clinically important effects? Possibly. Several lines of evidence are relevant.

Why is this relevant in prostate cancer?

First, there is the calcium connection. In 1998, Harvard’s Health

harvard health

Professionals Follow-up Study involving 47,781 men, they found that when there is a high consumption of calcium, whether that comes from food or supplements, there is an associated increased risk of advanced prostate cancer.

These Harvard scientists speculated that the problem is not the calcium, but rather the real problem is a relative lack of active vitamin D.

Notice what I just wrote; it is the relative lack.  When there is more vitamin D in relation to calcium intake, there is more conversion of the vitamin into the active form and the risk is mitigated.   The problem may be the lack of balancing active vitamin D.  That active form is only available if there is an increase in the inactive form to be converted.  Enter heliotherapy.

Second, there is a sunlight connection.  Prostate cancer is more common in less sunny areas, than it is in the sunny places.

In 2005, a 13-year Harvard study of 2,399 men was released saying that if a man had high blood levels of both forms of vitamin D — 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D, he statistically had a 45% lower risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer than men who had a below-average levels of the two forms of vitamin D.  [There are some  genetic variations in the vitamin D receptors that seemed to enhance the protective effect of the vitamin.  Some of these variations caused a lessening of conversion from the inactive to active forms.]

Is heliotherapy a panacea in prostate cancer?  No, or maybe not, but it may put you in a position to be prostate cancer free.  It is possible that heliotherapy can dramatically reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer and beyond that the risk of the more aggressive form.  This is caused by increasing the available vitamin D for conversion.  Heliotherapy can help you in this.

What is the good of vitamin D from Heliotherapy?

It appears that the natural source of vitamin D is heliotherapy.  We try to exist in an unnatural reality when we think to live without sunlight.  That which is natural is fitting.

When many years ago I was living in Louisiana, I was watching the local morning news show.  They were interviewing the rice queen, who was acting as a spokesperson for the rice industry.  She was a very nice beauty queen, but she just saying what she had been instructed her to say.

While talking about white rice,

she explained that to make it they took all the natural vitamins and minerals out of natural rice and then bleached it.  She quickly added that we should not worried about that because they put everything back in it artificially. It is enriched.  So it was nutritionally the same thing.

Really, I thought.  Man is sometimes so self assured that it is almost laughable.  How do we know everything that is in the rice and that we strip out of rice?  And how do we know that we have put everything back in and in a bioabsorbable form?  That is human arrogance.

Look at white rice compared to natural rice.

It is a different color, something is different.  [Some people say color reflects the vitamins.]  Taste the two rices.  They taste different. White rice is bland; natural rice tastes kind of nutty.  Something is different.  [Some people say flavor reflects the minerals.]  Mother nature knows best.

Many people take calcium supplements.  Some good may be gained, but in the main these are not bioabsorbable, and we eliminate it in our waste.  You are not designed to assimilate rocks.  [Vitamin D is important in absorbing calcium.]

Cows do not take supplements, but their milk

is calcium rich.  Calcium is available in plant life, which is bio usable.  Maybe we should be thinking more natural and looking to calcium rich plant foods that provide calcium naturally.  Nature’s way is the most fitting way.

Supplements for vitamin D may do some good.  But they are not the same thing, not as good as the natural way of having vitamin D.

Supplement your vitamin D with judicious sun therapy.  It is natural.  It has all the right things in it.  It is for sure bio-usable.
[This reasoning would also be applicable to artificial lamp phototherapy.  It may do some good.  But it is not the same.  When possible, natural direct sunlight is preferable.]

Healing In the Light of Day Pt. 5

What is it about Heliotherapy and Vitamin D?

It is fairly common knowledge that exposure to sunlight causes the body to produce vitamin D.  While the mass media is telling us this, we are warning us to avoid sunlight, especially midday sun, as it has been implicated in skin cancer, skin damage and premature aging.  These two messages seem to be contradictory.

The drug companies tell us about the harm of sunlight
sun fear

and offer us the solution in supplementation.  Follow the money.  In effect they are saying that we have low vitamin D because we have a pharmaceutical deficiency.

How can something that is good for you be bad for you?  Is that self contradictory or what?  It is good for you, but you should avoid it because it is bad for you.  True science does not speak out of both sides of its mouth.

In the Bible Timothy was instructed to drink a little wine for his stomach’s sake and often infirmities.

That is medically a good thing for some illnesses.  However, if Timothy took that advise to use a little wine as license to be a wino,

he would, in spite of the malady related good, do longterm injury to himself in that use of wine.  So the Bible approves medicinal wine and condems drunkenness.

Caffeine is another good example.  It is an antioxidant.  But if you overindulge in it, it becomes a negative.  It is not that you should go caffeine free.  Do that, and you miss the antioxidant properties.  But you should not over indulge in it.  Have a cup of full natural coffee or tea

and know that you done something good for yourself.  Do not be the victim of mass media propaganda.  [Tell a lie; tell it long enough; and it becomes the truth.]

It appears to me that the current hysteria about sunlight is a misinterpretation of the abusive use of sunlight, too much sun.  If you overindulge in the sun, you may develop things like skin cancer, skin damage, and premature aging.  But that says nothing about the judicious use sun therapy, heliotherapy.  [In logic we might call this the fallacy of converse accident, hasty generalization.]

If the truth be known, sensible, non-burning sun exposure, even at midday, with no sunscreen applied, is good for your health and not only because it is known to boost Vitamin D levels into optimal range.   Researchers have established that there are many healthful benefits which the sun provides our skin and body.  Some of these are not commonly known and appreciated by modern people.   While Vitamin D is important for healing and maintaining skin health, sunlight exposure benefits go much deeper.
vitamin D

What is vitamin D good for?  One way to answer this question is to look at the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.  You might be surprised to find that 75% of Americans have a vitamin D deficiency.

We see a lot of the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency nowadays.  It is a quiet epidemic for one simple reason. — People do not get enough sunlight anymore. — Our bodies only produce vitamin D as a result of exposure to ultraviolet rays.

While our bodies are designed for spending most of our time outdoors, we in the modern world spend our days confined inside and away from direct sunlight.  Compounding this problem of alienation from our natural environment, well meaning public health officials have declared war on the sun exposure for decades.  They urge people to avoid their historic natural full spectrum light exposure.

Put on that sunscreen or else!

The fact is, moderate full spectrum direct sun exposure is good for you.  Sunscreens block 100% of vitamin D production, which is related to ultra violet light waves.

Vitamin D deficiency may not have symptoms early on, but as it lingers on it can causes many health problems that are often misdiagnosed as just getting older.  Pain, thinking problems, mood fluctuations, fragile bones and a weak immune system gives you a few common low vitamin D symptoms.   The doctor may say you are just getting older and give some symptom reduction drug [and the side effects thereof] and never address the vitamin D deficiency.

Research studies have concluded that low vitamin D levels bring into your life an increased risk for serious health conditions often resulting in premature death.  Growing scientific evidence points out that if you have any chronic problems that your doctor seemingly can not answer, increasing vitamin D levels may just provide the answer that you have been looking for. Get some sun.

Vitamin D deficiency may include things like aches/pains, heart problems, low energy, weight gain, vision loss, cognitive problems, weakened bones, mood fluctuations, and weakened immunity.  All of these issues may be addressed or mitigated by heliotherapy, natural production of vitamin D.

My research has found only two ways to get vitamin D for optimal health, direct sun exposure and vitamin D supplementation.  Vitamin D, some say, has little to no toxicity, and that is doubly true of natural vitamin D that you produce for yourself with the sun.  Plants make from sunlight chlorophyll; you make vitamin D.

How much sun do you need for vitamin D production?  There are some very complicated charts for timing different skin types, but The Vitamin D Council gives a general rule of thumb.  The best recommendation is to bathe in the light of day the amount of time it takes to be halfway toward your skin turning pink.  Notice you are not turning pink.  It is halfway to the pink.  The standard is exposing one quarter of your skin to the full sunlight, no sunscreen.

Any area that has the sunlight should be allowed this general timing for a full treatment in that area.  If you are exposing your arms, leg, face and neck, you are not that far from a quarter of your skin.  The more skin you expose the less time is needed to receive the general full heliotherapy session for vitamin D. And the less skin the longer a session should be, but remember do not go into pink.

Take a walk in the sun.

Go a little longer every day.  You will find your limits and be getting healthful exercise too.

There are factors that affect the amount of vitamin D your body makes from sunlight. These include:

*1) How much skin you expose.  With more skin you exposed, you can produce more vitamin D.

*2) How old you are?  With age, your skin has a harder time producing vitamin D.

*3) What altitude are you at?  The mountain sun is more powerful than beach sunlight. With more altitude, you make more vitamin D.

*4) Is it cloudy?  The clouds block some of the UVB.  So as a result your skin makes less vitamin D.

*5) Is there air pollution?  Polluted air tends to absorb UVB or reflects it back into space.  Therefore, there is less vitamin D production.

*6) Are there glass between you and the sun?  Glass tends to block UVB.
